Bosque del Apache

A couple weeks ago I took a trip trip to Bosque del Apache ("woods of the Apache") national wildlife refuge near Socorro, New Mexico.  Its lakes are the wintering grounds of thousands of birds, mostly ducks, snow geese and sandhill cranes. 



The sight and sound of the birds flying in in the evening to spend the night at the lakes is spectacular.  In the morning, slightly after sunrise, all the snow geese gathered at one side of the lake from where they all took off as one huge flock.
